Meet Kevin! Our Intermediate PoleFit Champion

Earlier this year we hosted our very first in-house PoleFit Championships. Ten competitors took to the stage to battle it out in a night filled with pole, dance and inspirational performances.  After claiming the title of our first PoleFit Champion in the Intermediate division, we sat down with Kevin to find out a bit more about what went into his pre-comp prep and how he felt afterwards.

How did you prepare for the PoleFit Championships?
To prepare for the PoleFit Championships, I put in A LOT of time and effort into perfecting my pole routine; practising multiple times per week, attending lots different classes and stretching like crazy! The studio was nearly my second home in the lead up to the Championships.

What kind of challenges did you find in your training leading up to the PoleFit Championships?
In the lead up to the PoleFit Championships, there were MANY challenges. One of the bigger challenges was the choreography and floor work. I don't have a dancing background so it was very hard to find transition moves between the poles on the floor. Also, injuries just started to spring up and this only kept increasing as the training was ramped up and my body was put under a lot of strain.

What inspired you to compete in the first place?
I wanted to see how far I could push myself and where pole dancing could potentially lead me. Also, my friend annoyed me into competing.

What was the inspiration/motivation behind your routine?
My inspiration for my routine mainly came from the music that my lovely instructor helped me to select. He really helped inspire my routine and a lot of skills I put in my performance; he taught me most of them.

Do you see yourself competing or performing again in the future?
Maybe? I really loved how the competition pushed me past my breaking points and I want to see how far I can push myself again.

How did you feel winning the very first PoleFit Championships in your division?
I was completely shocked and grateful!  A few days before the competition I actually considered pulling out of the competition since my routine wasn't complete and my body was suffering from fatigue. But everyone told me to keep going despite my hesitation and so winning my division was a complete surprise.

What would you say to anyone thinking of competing in the next PoleFit Championships?
Just do it! Competing in a competition really changes your perspective on pole. It's on a whole different level than class is. It might be hard for a while but after you see what you produce, you'll be glad you did it. I sure was.
